Use the Internet and library books to find out as much as you can about the kind of food that is grown in countries in Africa With both the vegetable gardens and the fruit tree orchards, the types of seed and fruit grown depend on the climate of the region of each particular country. Part of your geography work could be to research the landscape and climate and seasons of the various countries. You will immediately notice how varied they can be.
Vegetable Gardens
Seeds for Africa support schools and rural communities in growing their own healthy fruit and vegetables to vastly improve their diet. Many of the vegetables grown are the same as are grown in this country.
- Leaf vegetables
- lettuce, parsley, chard, endive and spinach. Brassicas
- broccoli, brussel tops, cauliflower, sprouts, cabbage and curly kale. Stalk vegetables
- celery, fennel and rhubarb.
- Shoot vegetables
- chicory, asparagus and globe artichoke.
- Onion family
- onion, spring onion, shallot, leek, garlic and chives.
- Tubers
- potato, yam, sweet potato and cassava.
- Root vegetables
- carrot, beetroot, parsnip, turnip, swede and celeriac.
- Fruits
- tomato, aubergine, sweet pepper, chilli pepper, cucumber, courgette, squash, avocado and plantain.
- Pod vegetables
- mange tout, French bean, runner bean, cow pea and okra.
- Seed vegetables and pulses
- peas, broad beans, lima bean, soya bean and sweetcorn.
- Sprouted seed vegetable
- pea sprouts, lentils, common bean, bean sprouts and alfalfa.
- Edible fungi, cultivated mushroom, field mushroom and honey mushroom.
Fruit Trees
Seeds for Africa supplies fruit tree saplings so that the children can grow their own fruit tree orchards. The orchards do not look like the ones in the UK. If you have a look at our images, you will see that the trees are very often planted in between other things. Here are some of the fruits grown. There are far too many to mention them all but if you do some internet research you will be able to find many others and some of the names are wonderful!
