Primary Schools, Brownies and Cubs
HARVEST FESTIVAL is one of the main events for Seeds for Africa and every year, thousands of primary school children help us to raise many thousands of pounds to provide children in African schools with seeds, plants, tools and water tanks. Your help and enthusiasm means a great deal to us.
There are 2 traditional African stories to download:
Kweku Ananse outsmarts himself (Audio)
The Journey (Audio)
There are songs and a tongue twister to download:
Baa Baa Akaliga - in Lugandan
Muti Muhande - in Kikuyu
Senzeni Na Ma Afrika - in Zulu
Also this year we have prepared activity sheets to help with you preparation.
There are activity sheets for
Kenya
Malawi
Uganda
Also, don't forget to scroll down the page to find a wealth of other curriculum ideas as well as Aysha's Story - a powerpoint assembly.
You can raise funds throughout the year so here are just a few ideas already in use by schools to get you started:
- Draw fruit and vegetable shapes on the playground and fill with as many coins as you can. Have a Wellington boot walk around the school grounds where children are sponsored or pay a small fee to enter.
- Hold an African Day - make masks, try different foods and drinks, learn to drum, do some African artwork, learn an African dance, and listen to music, read stories and poems from Africa. Invite parents to show them the results and make a small charge. Sell or auction the Harvest Festival fare after your celebrations. Pay 20p to buy a piece of fruit for break.
- Make an Africa recipe book or poetry and song book and sell to parents and friends. Have a day when everyone pays 50p to come in bright clothing for the day. See how many Wellington boots can be filled up with coins. Hold a disco in aid of Seeds for Africa with proceeds to Seeds for Africa. Hold sponsored events throughout the year. Organise a sunflower growing competition with a small entry fee. Hold a competition for growing vegetables in the school garden with a small entry fee.
Secondary Schools, Guides and Scouts
Many older children have become champions of Seeds for Africa and you too can register as a Seeds for Africa speaker. We will send you an information pack and slide presentation which will enable you to give a talk to your feeder primary schools, cub, brownie, scout or guide groups or indeed any community group.
This is extremely good experience for the individual and a very valuable addition to any Curriculum Vitae. Call 01227 823202 for more details or click on the link Become a Speaker This a great time to get more involved.
Seeds for Africa would like to support the work in the curriculum by offering projects for Citizenship which involve a global dimension. Learning about the wider world in a context that is real is very important to children and their perceptions of others.
If you are a Business Studies teacher or in charge of Citizenship why not give us a call on 01227 8283202 or email info@seedsforafrica.org and we will work with you to help design fundraising projects that meet your needs and benefit African children. Designing projects around African culture could bring a unique dimension to your school programmes.
Here are some ideas that you could use to raise funds:
- Organise community gardening for people for a small charge. (Private gardeners can be expensive and many people would welcome help with cutting grass and weeding.
- Wash cars for teachers, friends and neighbours.
- Organise a movie night with nibbles and invite your friends for a small charge. This could become a monthly event with friends taking it in turns or if you are in a Youth Group perhaps it could become a regular feature.
- Organise a Karaoke night at your school or Youth Group.
- Organise a Talent Night at your school or Youth Group.

The ideas below are activities that have been tried in schools with Key Stage 2 children. Many of them could be adapted for Key Stage 1 children working in groups with an adult.
Of course, teachers are creative and resourceful and this is by no means an exhaustive list.
